Artist Biography

I began working with pottery to create a surface for painting. I did not realize I would fall in love with this medium the first day I took a hand-building class. Fast forward 23 years, and I have just completed an MFA in Ceramics at Hood College.

My sculptures combine geometric forms, positive and negative spaces, and carved and stamped surfaces. Terra sigillata and oxide patinas recreate the weathered surfaces of architecture. These elements respond to my search for belonging as a transnational individual. I am a Puerto Rican/American artist, an American citizen, born and raised on the island of Puerto Rico. As an adult, I have lived in several states, including Massachusetts and Maryland. In my search for belonging, I learned that embracing my Puerto Rican heritage and accepting my American experience creates the personal balance that grounds my identity and my sense of belonging.
